Abstract

The scholars of Oman made substantial contributions to the Qurʾanic sciences and to the service of the Book of God, filling the shelves of the Islamic library with works on exegesis and the Qurʾanic sciences. Some of these were specialised and devoted to a single branch of the field, while others formed part of encyclopaedic collections or extended works without separate treatment. A careful examination of the writings of the early Omanis makes plain their participation in building Arab-Islamic culture — a participation in which they attained a standing no one can deny. Proceeding from this, the present study aims to identify the contributions of Oman's scholars to the Qurʾanic sciences, to record their works and to establish the place those works hold within the wider Islamic scholarly tradition.
