Abstract
The subject of abrogation has held the attention of Muslim scholars from the earliest centuries to the present day; disagreement over it has been abundant, with much given and taken, and the positions of scholars have varied between those who went to excess in applying it and those who went to excess in denying its existence. Among the very important topics in the Qurʾanic sciences is that of abrogation in the Holy Qurʾan, and this study surveys the definition of abrogation, the places of the verses said to be abrogated, and the statements of the exegetes concerning them. Imam al-Suyūṭī composed a poem identifying the well-known places in which abrogation has been claimed, and against this background the research sets out the position of Shaykh Aḥmad al-Khalīlī on the question.
