The Theory of the Qurʾanic Sciences in Ibn Barakah's al-Jāmiʿ
Naẓarīyat ʻUlūm al-Qurʼān ladá Ibn Barakah min khilāl Kitābihi al-Jāmiʻ
نظرية علوم القرآن لدى ابن بركة من خلال كتابه الجامع
Abstract
A study of the Omani juristic heritage reveals within it an abundant store of material on the subjects of the Qurʾanic sciences. On scholarly grounds the researcher holds that a theory of the Qurʾanic sciences took shape in the work of Abū Muḥammad Ibn Barakah al-Bahlawī (fourth century AH), dispersed through his book al-Jāmiʿ, and that this is among the most important of the Omani contributions to the service of the Book of God. The paper seeks to reveal the content of this theory and to test the extent of its existence: does what is found in al-Jāmiʿ in fact constitute a theory, and what is a theory in the first place? And why al-Jāmiʿ of Ibn Barakah rather than other Omani books? It treats the principal elements that form its features, beginning with the descent of revelation and its modes.
