Abstract
Many contemporary international charters have urged the renunciation of violence and the adoption of a spirit of tolerance and coexistence, whether religious, ethnic or doctrinal, and this appears above all through the ideas advanced by scholars and thinkers. Among those who have carried this banner throughout their lives is Shaykh Aḥmad ibn Ḥamad al-Khalīlī, in his exegesis of the Holy Qurʾan through the circles he holds at the Sultan Qaboos Mosque in Muscat and in his book Jawāhir al-Tafsīr; and the same is true of Shaykh Muḥammad Saʿīd Kaʿbāsh. This study examines the exegetical discourse of both scholars, drawing out how the values of coexistence and tolerance are grounded in their reading of the Qurʾanic text and how each addresses religious and doctrinal difference.
