Abstract
Imam Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī al-ʿUmānī was an accomplished master in a number of sciences, and among those in which he excelled beyond compare is the science of pause and resumption, on which he composed an abundant and comprehensive book speaking to his skill and his far-reaching acuity in discussing views and choices: the book al-Murshid, reckoned among the most important works in this art. Al-ʿUmānī was marked by a singular personality and complete independence in his book, manifest in his choices concerning the places of pause and resumption, which he grounded upon firm foundations and precise rules. This research traces the choices of Imam Abū Muḥammad al-ʿUmānī on pause and resumption through al-Murshid, and reveals the foundations upon which they rest.
