The Contribution of the Ibāḍī School to Realising Established Arab Usage in Discourse: Creed as a Case Study

Abstract
The Ibāḍī school is among the Islamic schools that have played a part in bringing the community to an awareness of realising human stewardship on earth. There exist within the Ibāḍī school sources and references that bring out the manner of deriving doctrinal questions in accordance with established Arab usage in discourse — the principle affirmed by Imam al-Shāfiʿī and by other scholars. This study examines how that principle operates within Ibāḍī doctrinal reasoning, taking creed as its case study, and sets out the relation between the linguistic conventions of Arab discourse and the derivation of belief from the Qurʾanic text.
