Abstract

Tajwīd is among the greatest of the Qurʾanic sciences, bound as it is to reciting the Holy Qurʾan soundly and measuredly as it was sent down upon the Prophet, for God sent it down measured and well recited, as He says: "And We have recited it with a measured recitation" (al-Furqān: 32). This divine performative science, which raises the standing of the Qurʾanic words and their effect in the souls of those who recite and hear them, did not come in vain but came to reach the depths of the hearts of the lovers of the Book of God — in understanding, contemplation and reflection, and then in effect upon word and deed, so that the life of the Muslim may be filled with Qurʾanic character. This study traces the contributions of Omani scholars across the stages by which this science developed.
