Abstract
In examining the heritage of the Ibāḍīs, the author observed a prominent and strong inclination to weigh questions of belief within the principles of religion by recourse to the great Book that transcends time and place, seeking from it both arbitration and the inspiration of truth. Some may ask what distinguishes the Ibāḍī scholars from others in this field, when all declare in their principles of derivation and their theory of knowledge that they refer to the Book and the Sunnah; and what is this disagreement in the principles of religion that has occurred and continues to occur among the sections of the community, with the exchange of accusations, harsh judgements and name-calling, and the divergence in the grounds of reliance in belief between excess and neglect in their dependence on transmission or on reason. The study takes al-Ḥaqq al-Dāmigh as its case in answering these questions.
