Abstract

In the book Alif Bāʾ al-Makhṭūṭāt al-ʿUmānīyah the authors found important texts confirming Omani attention to the Qurʾan and its sciences from several angles: the names of copyists of muṣḥafs and of works on the Qurʾanic sciences — commentaries, works on the rare vocabulary of the Qurʾan, and on the abrogating and the abrogated; the names of libraries preserving these scholarly treasures, among them the library of the Ministry of Heritage, the library of Ḥamad al-Būsaʿīdī, the collection of Sālim ibn Ḥamad al-Ḥārithī and the collection of Sāʿid al-Riyāmī; and the names of figures who turned to this kind of record — governors and scholars — through copying, gift, purchase and endowment. The paper draws these manifestations together as evidence of a sustained Omani engagement with the Qurʾanic sciences.
