Abstract

The Qurʾan contains the various branches of knowledge and clarifies the many kinds of learning that human beings need, the medical dimension among them; it is itself named in the text as a cause of healing and remedy, in the verse "And We send down of the Qurʾan that which is healing and mercy for the believers" (al-Isrāʾ: 82). It heals souls of the diseases of the heart — envy, greed, hypocrisy, doubt, appetite and confusion — and heals bodies through recitation over them, and it is rich in medical guidance that people need. This paper sheds light on the most prominent of that guidance as it appears in Omani writings. Its aims are to define Qurʾanic medical guidance and establish its importance, to present examples of the guidance the Qurʾan indicates as treated by Omani authors, and to reveal the effects of that guidance on human health. The method followed is descriptive and analytical. The study seeks to open the field for scholars of Qurʾanic studies to attend to the medical indications in the Qurʾan, and to show the care Omani scholars and authors have given to this dimension.
