Abstract

This research sets out to uncover the aspects of delight (imtāʿ) and engagement (tashwīq) in Omani scholarly writing, prompted by the general absence of these two important elements from scholarly works — an absence that has led readers to turn away from such works across the disciplines and to engage with them only in a small band of patient readers who have made endurance their mount towards the desired goal. Yet if that observation holds in general terms, it does not follow that the elements of delight and engagement are absent from this gateway to distinction, namely scholarly works in verse and in prose. The study argues that Omani scholarly works, versified and prose alike, gave greater attention than others across the several arts of learning — creedal, juridical, grammatical, historical and political — to blending their material with delight and engagement. It treats the two qualities first lexically and technically, then traces them through the Omani corpus.
