Abstract

Reading the collection Ajniḥat al-Nahār by the Omani poet Saʿīd al-Ṣaqlāwī — a poet of genuine artistic sensibility whose verse issues from natural gift rather than artifice, from a heart in love with its homeland and burdened by the concerns of its Arab identity — the author was arrested by syntactic phenomena that recur throughout the poems and bear upon meaning in numerous places. The study proceeds from the conviction that the poet did not employ these constructions gratuitously or merely to satisfy metre and rhyme, but for semantic ends that the paper seeks to uncover, on the principle that syntax must be tied to meaning and that grammatical analysis should not be separated from sense or excluded from the interpretation of poetry. The paper argues that a poet is granted latitude not given to others, since he has a language of his own, and it examines how al-Ṣaqlāwī exploits the varied resources of Arabic — notably the extension of sentence structure across many of his poems — to particular ends.
