Hadiths on Ethics in the Musnad of Imam al-Rabīʿ: A Semantic, Lexical and Morphological Study

Abstract
This research sheds light on one of the historically oldest Omani books, the Musnad of Imam al-Rabīʿ al-Farāhīdī al-ʿUmānī, as represented in its hadiths on ethics, studying selected examples semantically in their lexical, morphological, phonetic and syntactic branches. Its importance lies in the importance of the text, the book and the subject alike. The text is the Prophetic hadith, of whose speaker God says that he does not speak from caprice, and which is the second source of Islamic legislation. The book is among the oldest Omani documents, since its author, Imam al-Rabīʿ al-Farāhīdī al-ʿUmānī (d. 170 AH), was a scholar of the second Hijri century. The subject is ethics, which is among the purposes of the law and the essence of religion, and by which the Seal of the Prophets was praised. The study addresses two questions: did the Arabs of old know semantics in the sense now intended by the term, and what is the effect of semantics on the understanding of a text? It follows a descriptive-analytical method.
