Abstract

Ethics holds an elevated place in Islam, since its end is the highest good and the bringing of the human being, by way of the virtues, to the ideal, to human perfection and to eternal happiness. An indication of the importance of ethics in Islam is that when God praised the Prophet He praised him for his great character, in the verse "And indeed you are of a great moral character" (al-Qalam: 4); of which Imam Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq said that God commanded His Prophet to noble character in this verse, and that there is no verse in the Qurʾan more comprehensive of noble character than it. For this reason the scholars of Islam gave distinguished attention to the science of ethics, and the Ibāḍī school was distinguished from the other schools in not separating juristic rulings from the ethics of the one who performs them: it seeks always that legal rulings should achieve the purposes for which they were laid down, so that it is not sound in its view for a person to abstain from food and drink as one fasting and then commit grave wrongs such as lying and backbiting.
