The Attention of Ibāḍī Jurisprudence to Medical Ethics
ʻInāyat al-Fiqh al-Ibāḍī bi-al-Akhlāqīyāt al-Ṭibbīyah

Abstract
The rulings of the Islamic law are founded on securing benefits and averting harms from God's servants, and they extend to acts of worship and to transactions, including what bears on the medical dimension in preserving human health and restoring it once lost. The compendia of Ibāḍī jurisprudence accordingly did not neglect medical ethics for patient and physician together; rather the juristic rulings realise those ethics and embody them tangibly in people's lives. The problem of the research is to study the attention Ibāḍī jurisprudence gives to medical ethics through the legal rulings and juristic maxims, in order to set out that attention, to bring out its role in people's practical lives, and to draw on it in contemporary medical questions. The research follows three methods: the inductive, in surveying texts from the juristic and medical compendia; the descriptive, in defining juristic and scientific terms; and the analytical, in analysing the legal texts relating to medical ethics. It concludes with a set of findings and recommendations, foremost that medical ethics in Islam rests on fixed foundations.
