Instilling Ethics through the Fatwa: Imam al-Sālimī as a Case Study

Abstract
Education takes many paths in seeking to plant concepts in the human soul, and the effectiveness of its influence varies with the channel it uses. Since instilling character, or changing concepts, becomes harder as a person advances in years, it is the scholar's duty to seek the gentlest channel by which to reach the human heart; and the questioner seeking a legal opinion, in a state of hesitation and perplexity, is nearer to having the scholar's guidance and formation take root within him. Scholars setting out the etiquette of the fatwa were therefore careful to draw the muftī's attention to this fine point. It was accordingly the practice of the learned educator Shaykh ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥumayd al-Sālimī to make use of the questioner's receptiveness, planting praiseworthy qualities and good traits within the folds of his answer even where the question bore no relation to ethics — sometimes prompted by the subject of the question itself, sometimes by the state of the questioner, and sometimes by what the question implied.
