Abstract
It is evident from the heritage of al-ʿAllāmah Saʿīd ibn Khalfān al-Khalīlī that creed is not a matter of disputation and sterile debate yielding no ethical benefit or effect on conduct; rather creed is in its foundation a prepared road for correcting human conduct and elevating character. This is what should truly be drawn out from the presentation of doctrinal questions in the works of the scholars of theology: the extraction of the effect of that creed upon a person's ethics and acts, whether in relation to his Lord, to himself, or to other people. In his encyclopaedic writings, when treating doctrinal questions, al-Khalīlī connected true faith with its corresponding practical conduct, so that faith is never stripped of its practical content. A believer's faith in God and his knowledge of the inviolability of killing his brother, and that the consequence is eternity in the Fire, affects his conduct and character and restrains him from such a crime; and likewise his belief in the inviolability of theft, of trespass on the rights of others, and of other prohibitions, forms an inner restraint arising from the effect of creed.
