Abstract
Justice is the foundation of rule, and an unjust state never endures. Justice in Islam is a concept of clear features, and it remains only to read history to learn the methods of its application. From this starting point comes our study of the justice of the imams between theory and practice during the second Ibāḍī imamate. The study aims to shed light on the conceptions of justice in the various Islamic schools and to make clear to the reader the role of justice in establishing security and stability in the state. It poses a number of questions, among them: what is meant by the concept of justice among Muslim scholars? How did the Ibāḍīs embody justice in practice? How did justice contribute to the security and stability of the state? The study reaches a number of findings, among them the concern of those who bind and loose to choose a suitable imam who would make justice the foundation of his rule, and the models worth pausing over in applying justice to every stratum of society, from the imam down to its smallest member. It closes with recommendations.
