Abstract

Language is a great and essential value in the life of every nation, a supreme distinction and a lofty station, for it is the instrument that carries meanings and visions, transmits concepts and the many kinds of knowledge and culture, and forms the field of thought — establishing thereby the bonds of communication among the people of a single nation, and through it their closeness, likeness and harmony. Language, as has been said, is the cultural arsenal that builds a nation and protects its being; the German philosopher Fichte held that language makes of the nation that speaks it a single whole subject to laws, and is the true bond between the world of bodies and the world of minds, while Muṣṭafá Ṣādiq al-Rāfiʿī wrote that language is a manifestation of history, and history the attribute of the nation. Among the oldest and most distinguished languages of the world is Arabic, which retains its characteristics of vocabulary, structure, morphology, grammar, lexicon and rhetoric. Against this background the paper examines the teaching of the Arabic language in South Korea.
