Abstract
Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Saʿīd al-Muqriʾ al-ʿUmānī is among the few Omanis who combined a firm command of the Arabic language with learning in the Qurʾanic readings, and it may well be that command of Arabic which made his works on the readings among the strongest in the field anywhere. This research aims to give a brief historical account of al-Muqriʾ al-ʿUmānī; to bring out his strength in Arabic and his contribution to it; to demonstrate that contribution through two of his books, al-Awsaṭ on the Qurʾanic readings and al-Murshid on pausing and beginning; to reveal his practical linguistic work in linguistic terminology and linguistic criticism; and to establish all of this through varied applications drawn from the two books. The study is organised in an introduction, three chapters — an introduction to the author and his principal books, his contribution to the Arabic language, and his applications in the service of that language — and a conclusion. It belongs to the conference axis on the development and examination of the Arabic sciences.
