“The Impact of Missionary Activity and Colonialism on the Erosion of Arab and Islamic Identity in the Swahili Language.” Dr. Abuyaasir Mbwarali Kame PhD Minister for Education Mombasa County former Lecturer and Director Moi University [email protected] This study examines the negative effects left by Christian missionary activity and Western colonialism on the erosion of Arab and Islamic identity in the Swahili language, which has Arabic origins in many of its vocabulary, meanings, and cultural expressions. This process led to a remarkable weakening of the Arab and Islamic presence within Swahili terminology as a whole. The research problem centers on the extent to which colonial and missionary influences contributed to distancing the Swahili language from its Arab roots and transforming it into a language that serves church interests and functions as a missionary tool aligned with Western agendas and references. The significance of this study lies in demonstrating the Arab presence in East African countries and their influence on the Swahili language. It also highlights the role played by coastal scholars in defending the Swahili language against colonial and missionary schemes through their mastery of writing Swahili in the Arabic script and their rejection of the Latin script. The study aims to shed light on the missionary methods and schemes used to erase Arab and Islamic traces from the Swahili language and to reveal the resulting negative impacts on this language. It also seeks to clarify the intellectual and cultural effects of colonialism in its targeting of the Swahili language, while proposing scholarly solutions to preserve the original identity of Swahili. Methodologically, the study adopts a historical-analytical approach by tracing colonial and missionary movements and examining the stages they followed in weakening the Swahili language—from its Arab source to vocabulary linked to the English and Bantu languages and bearing ecclesiastical characteristics. The study reaches expected findings, most notably that missionary activity and colonialism were major factors in erasing Arab and Islamic influences from the Swahili language. Their greatest concern was the spread of Islam, and this fear led them to eliminate Arabic-derived vocabulary in Swahili, resulting in its weakening and the creation of an environment that associates Swahili primarily with the Bantu language family.

The Effect of Missionary Activity and Colonialism on the Erosion of Arab and Islamic Identity in Swahili, and the Response to It
Taʼthīr al-Tanṣīr wa-al-Istiʻmār fī Taʼākul al-Huwīyah al-ʻArabīyah wa-al-Islāmīyah fī al-Lughah al-Sawāḥilīyah wa-al-Hadaf tujāha Dhālika

This study treats the negative effects left by Western missionary activity and colonialism in the erosion of the Arab and Islamic identity of the Swahili language, a language Arab in origin in much of its vocabulary, its semantics and its culture — an erosion that markedly weakened the Arab and Islamic presence within its terminology. The problem of the research turns on the extent of colonial and missionary influence in removing Swahili from its Arabic roots and turning it into a language serving the interests of the church and an instrument of mission serving Western interests and frames of reference. The importance of the study lies in establishing the Arab presence in the countries of East Africa and their influence on Swahili, and likewise in showing the extent to which the scholars of the coast rose to defend the Swahili language against colonial and missionary designs.
