The Translation Movement in Zanzibar between Liberation and Development
Ḥarakat al-Tarjamah fī Zanjibār bayna al-Taḥrīr wa-al-Taṭwīr
حركة الترجمة في زنجبار بين التحرير والتطوير
Abstract
God honoured the human being with the faculty of speech, that he might express what lies within himself, the thoughts of his mind and the feelings of his heart, and communicate with others in his private and public sphere; and the person near at hand needed to convey his thoughts to the person far away by means of writing, and so invented the letters that compose words and sentences to render thought and feeling. Thus languages and dialects came into being and purposes and cultures varied among peoples and civilizations. In order to exchange ideas between states and individuals, people learned and mastered the languages of others by means of translation, and ideas spread among peoples and civilizations. Among the countries in which translation ranged widely is Zanzibar in African Tanzania, whose people struggled resolutely in resisting negative cultures and embraced the positive cultures that came to their land from centuries past to the present day. This paper examines that translation movement.
