Abstract

The Omani relationship with East Africa was distinguished from that with other regions by its interconnection and continuity, owing to the historical depth of the relationship between the two sides. More than one historian has recorded that contact between Oman and East Africa began before Islam, and that the migration of the Julandá family to East Africa during the campaigns of al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf al-Thaqafī against Oman in the first Hijri century occurred only because of an entity of theirs already existing in that land. The relationship and contact then increased in the years that followed through the Omani commercial movement, which established trading centres in a number of the coastal towns. This research examines the role of the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman in strengthening this Omani-Swahili relationship in its dimensions of influence and interaction.
