Swahili and the Embodiment of the Omani Civilizational Contribution in East Africa
al-Lughah al-Sawāḥilīyah wa-Tamaththul al-Isʹhām al-Ḥaḍārī al-ʻUmānī fī Sharq Ifrīqiyā

Abstract
This study treats the Swahili language as a linguistic and cultural frame through which the Omani civilizational contribution in East Africa was embodied, within an extended historical context of interaction between Omanis and the African coastal communities. It proceeds from a central question: how did the Omani presence contribute to the formation of Swahili as a cultural structure capable of embodying a civilizational contribution and transmitting it across generations, beyond its function as an instrument of daily communication? The importance of the research arises from its adoption of language as an analytical entry point for understanding civilizational interaction and from its bringing out of the Omani role in shaping the cultural and linguistic landscape of East Africa. The study analyses the manifestations of that embodiment at several levels of the language.
