The Effect of Arabic on Swahili: A Field Experience — Zanzibar and Tabora Region as a Case Study

Abstract
This paper proceeds from the experience the author gained from 2002 onwards in teaching sections of students arriving from Tanzania at the Maʿhad al-Ḥayāh in al-Qarārah in Algeria until 2006; then from four years as a student at the Institute of Sharia Sciences in Oman; and then from seven years in Tanzania as a teacher of Arabic and the religious subjects, supervisor of extracurricular Arabic activities and subsequently director, under the supervision of the Zanzibari Istiqama Association and the Tijārah al-Rābiḥah Association, both directed by a distinguished group of Omanis. Through this the author discovered several points shared between Omani and Zanzibari society, and the experience allowed a close view of Omani effects in the missionary, scholarly, intellectual, social and architectural spheres. The research asks: what are the most important surviving Omani effects in present-day Zanzibar, and what are the aspects of the influence of Arabic and of the Omani dialect upon Swahili speech?
