Linguistic Change in Lamu Island: A Sociolinguistic Perspective in the Context of Historical Interaction and Contemporary Globalization Madghis Madi Abstract Lamu Island represents one of the oldest Swahili urban centers on the East African coast and has historically functioned as a linguistic and cultural contact zone within the Indian Ocean world. Over several centuries, sustained interaction between Swahili communities and Arab—particularly Omani—traders, scholars, and administrators contributed to the formation of a distinct Swahili linguistic and cultural identity. In recent decades, however, this historically rooted linguistic ecology has been undergoing significant transformation due to globalization and the rapid expansion of tourism. This paper examines contemporary linguistic change in Lamu from a sociolinguistic perspective, focusing on the shifting status and functions of the local Swahili dialect (Ki-Amu) in relation to English. The central research problem addresses the following question: to what extent do current socioeconomic pressures—especially tourism—reshape language use, speaker attitudes, and patterns of multilingualism in Lamu, and how do these changes affect Swahili as a marker of local identity? The study aims to: analyze lexical and functional changes in the Swahili spoken in Lamu, document emerging patterns of diglossia and multilingualism involving Swahili, Standard Swahili, and English, and situate contemporary linguistic shifts within their broader historical context of Arab–Swahili interaction, with particular reference to Omani influence. Methodologically, the paper adopts a qualitative sociolinguistic approach, drawing on long-term fieldwork conducted on Lamu Island over approximately four years. Data sources include semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and discourse analysis of everyday interactions in domestic, religious, commercial, and tourist-oriented settings. These contemporary observations are also examined comparatively in light of data from the author’s doctoral dissertation completed in 2007, allowing for a longitudinal perspective on linguistic change. The findings suggest that Swahili in Lamu is not experiencing language loss in the strict sense, but rather a functional reconfiguration. English increasingly dominates economic and tourist domains, while Swahili—particularly its local variety—remains central to community life, religious practice, and symbolic identity. At the same time, a simplified, hybridized “touristic Swahili” has emerged, reflecting market-driven communication needs. The paper concludes that Lamu constitutes a valuable case study for understanding the dynamic relationship between language, identity, and cultural economy in Indian Ocean societies. It highlights the importance of sociolinguistic research in informing policies aimed at safeguarding intangible linguistic heritage without isolating it from contemporary global realities.

Linguistic Change on Lamu Island: A Sociolinguistic Approach in the Light of Historical Influences and Contemporary Globalisation

Lamu Island is among the oldest coastal towns on the eastern coast of Africa, having been for centuries a vital centre of linguistic and cultural interaction between Swahilis and Arabs, and Omanis in particular, within the commercial and religious network of the Indian Ocean. In recent decades, however, the island has witnessed deep linguistic change as a result of tourism and globalisation, directly affecting the standing of Swahili and of its traditional dialect, Ki-Amu. The research rests on a central question concerning the nature of the linguistic changes occurring on Lamu Island and the extent to which Swahili continues as a symbol of identity amid the growing dominance of English as the language of economy, tourism and education. It further seeks to understand how these changes have reshaped speakers' attitudes towards their own language, in a balance between cultural belonging and practical pragmatism, and includes analysis of shifts in the lexicon.
