Abstract

No researcher can stand apart from the recipient and reader of his research, writing for himself alone without room in his horizon for one who shares and converses with him; in modern thought the two are partners in the subject of research, and it is the researcher's duty to share, to converse and to present the ideas he will advance. Proceeding from this, the author sets out his approach to the question of Omani leadership in spreading Arab culture and Islam in the countries of Southeast Asia and China. Wide reading furnished much of the material for this approach, particularly in what is early in history and in events, and then in Oman's strategic maritime position. The paper traces the Omani role as an early and sustained agent in carrying Arabic language, Arab culture and Islam eastward across the Indian Ocean.
