Abstract

The Sultanate of Oman began intermittent contacts with the principal states of ASEAN early, from 1950, but began to establish formal relations in 1978 with the start of the country's diplomatic opening to the international community. The importance of the Omani orientation towards ASEAN lies in its coming amid the strong rise of the economies of Southeast Asia and China, in the strengthening of the Sultanate's position as a station for international trade and for multimodal transport movement between the continents, and in its role as a hub. This study analyses the economic relations between the Sultanate of Oman and the ASEAN grouping, tracing their development and assessing the opportunities they present within Oman's wider economic orientation.
