Abstract

The voices of orientalists are raised from time to time claiming that the religion of Islam spread across the earth by the sword and the shedding of blood, and that but for its imposition by conquering armies upon defeated lands it would not have appeared. In this study, however, the author treats the spread of Islam in the furthest reaches of the earth by peaceful means, far removed from wars and conquests — the fullest answer to the orientalist claim just mentioned. Islam penetrated those regions and did not halt, moving from one country to another smoothly and in advance of the arrival of Muslim armies. God favoured the land of Oman generally, and Ṣuḥār in particular, with the blessing of Islam without fighting, and then honoured it by making it a cause of the spread of Islam in various regions of the earth — here meaning China and the countries of Southeast Asia — likewise without fighting, which is the central axis of this study.
