This study treats Oman's commercial relations with China from the seventh to the sixteenth century CE. It opens with an account of the lands of China in the Islamic heritage, then treats the navigational activity of Omanis before Islam, before setting out the factors that contributed to the establishment of relations between Oman and the region of Southeast Asia. These are treated under two headings: natural factors, comprising position, terrain and natural resources; and human factors. Through this framework the study traces how geography and human enterprise together made Oman a participant in the long-distance maritime trade that bound the Arabian Gulf to the ports of China across nine centuries, and what goods, routes and communities that trade produced.
