History of Relations between Oman and Japan Haruo Endo Introduction Japan is an island country located at the far edge of the Northeast Asia. In ancient times many small independent countries defended their territories by themselves in Japan and it is considered that Japan was consolidated into a single country in the fourth century. It was not in a position to have contact with West Asia so early, let alone Oman. As far as Oman is concerned, as to human exchange, it is assumed that a Japanese arrived at Muscat in 1691 during Edo period (1603-1868). It was in 1880, during early Meiji period (1868-1912), that a Japanese visited Oman for the first time on record. As to trade, Japanese exports expanded remarkably during the First World War (1914-18), although Japan's exports of sundry goods began as early as the Meiji period. As to cultural exchange, frankincense was introduced to Japan via China during the Nara period (710-794) and Japanese book listed information on Sohar and Miribat during Edo period. The article details history of relations between Oman and Japan, in terms of human exchange, trade and cultural exchange from ancient times until the end of the Second World War. Huma
