History of Relations between Oman and Japan
Abstract
Japan is an island country located at the far edge of Northeast Asia. In ancient times many small independent countries defended their territories by themselves in Japan, and it is considered that Japan was consolidated into a single country in the fourth century. It was not in a position to have contact with West Asia so early, let alone with Oman. As far as human exchange with Oman is concerned, it is assumed that a Japanese arrived at Muscat in 1691 during the Edo period (1603–1868). It was in 1880, during the early Meiji period (1868–1912), that a Japanese visited Oman for the first time on record. As to trade, Japanese exports expanded remarkably during the First World War (1914–18), although Japan's exports of sundry goods had begun earlier. This paper traces the history of relations between the two countries from these first contacts onward.
