Abstract
During his tour of Central Asia and the ASEAN group in September and October 2013, the Chinese president Xi Jinping advanced the initiatives of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Twenty-First Century Maritime Silk Road, known in short as the Belt and Road. China's aim in this important initiative was to revive the old Silk Road, to build the new economic belt of that road, and to advance the largest economic, cultural and human project of our present age. States along the route competed to join the initiative, and popular and cultural institutions in the countries overlooking the old Silk Road took an interest in it and occupied themselves with the question of how they might contribute to reviving the route and supporting the initiative. Omani official and popular institutions were not far from this interest. Against that background this study examines Omani-Chinese relations between 618 and 1279 CE as an early partnership along the same road.
