Abstract
The history of Arab-Islamic trade in the Arabian Gulf abounds with the names of coastal towns that formed important centres of commerce along this maritime route from the earliest ages. What concerns this research is the ports of Oman and their effect on trade with Southeast Asia and China as recorded by Yāqūt al-Ḥamawī (d. 626 AH / 1228 CE) in his Muʿjam al-Buldān. The study of Oman's ports is at once an important and an absorbing subject, since it reflects the extent of the relationship between Oman and Southeast Asia and China in the political, commercial and cultural fields, and the effect of that exchange appears plainly in the civilizations of both parties. Ports are described as the beating heart of a state, the mirror reflecting the civilization of a country, the window looking out upon the worlds beyond it, and the economy that expresses the extent of commercial activity within it.
