الحياة الاجتماعية في عمان في كتابات الرحالة البريطانيين في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر
Abstract
Oman enjoyed considerable attention from foreign travellers from ancient times, owing to its strategic position overlooking three seas, its economic importance and commercial role, and its political importance as a strong independent state in the Arabian Gulf region which formed cultural, social and political extensions into Southeast Asia and the eastern coast of Africa. The first half of the nineteenth century witnessed an influx of British travellers to the various regions of Oman, due principally to the signing of treaties between the two sides. This study examines what those travellers recorded of social life in Oman — its customs, its households, its towns and its patterns of daily living — and assesses the value and the limits of these accounts as historical sources.
