Abstract

This research treats a precise subject the author considers worthy of study: the economic standing Oman enjoyed in the early Islamic period and its effect on the spread of the Islamic religion and the rooting of Arab-Islamic culture across wide reaches of the world, particularly in the Malay archipelago, China, Africa and India. The importance of the subject arises from its resting upon a descriptive and analytical presentation of an important body of sources, documents and historical texts that make clear the Omani economic, cultural and civilizational role in the period of Islamic foundation in the Arab region and the world at large, and the eminent economic standing Oman enjoyed for several centuries and its effect in strengthening Arab and Islamic identity in regions remote from the Arab and Islamic world. The question the research seeks to address is the extent to which this activity achieved that effect.
