Abstract
This research treats the role of Omani merchants in carrying the Islamic mission to East and Central Africa, taking Shaykh Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm al-ʿĀmirī as its case study. It is organised around the reign of Sayyid Saʿīd ibn Sulṭān (1804–1856) and his attention to commerce; the Arab caravan trade within Africa; the routes of Arab trade in the interior; the establishment of Arab centres and stations within Africa; the relation between trade and the spread of Islam in East Africa; and the encounter between Shaykh Aḥmad al-ʿĀmirī and Suna, king of Buganda. The research closes with the principal civilizational outcomes that followed from Omani commercial activity in East Africa, showing how the merchant network became a channel for religious and cultural transmission deep into the continent.
