Abstract
Shaykh ʿAlī Muḥsin al-Barwānī (1919–2006) was an Omani political leader, thinker, scholar and poet born in the Sultanate of Zanzibar, who lived the concerns of the Islamic community and of Muslims generally and of Zanzibar in particular. He led the national movement in Zanzibar and stood firm against British policies there, and was among the most prominent leaders of the Zanzibar Nationalist Party, which resisted and struggled for Zanzibar to attain its independence in December 1963. He then stood against the bloody coup in Zanzibar, whose victims amounted to nearly a third of the island's population between killed, drowned and displaced, for which he was imprisoned for more than ten years. Nor was he apart from the questions of the Islamic world, such as Palestine. This study examines his role in building national unity in the Sultanate of Zanzibar.
