Abstract
This study seeks to identify the roles played by Omanis, the pioneers of the Indian Ocean, which was an area of their influence during the period from the first to the fourth Hijri century. Through it they reached East Africa and Southeast Asia carrying their trade, while being at the same time the vanguard bearing Islam and its civilization, carrying with them the Arabic language and their customs. The study is organised around the temporal, spatial and intellectual framework of the subject; the factors that contributed to the success of Omanis in spreading Islamic civilization in Southeast Asia; the difficulties that affected the expansion of that role in the region; and the Omani influences upon Southeast Asia, before setting out the research findings.
