Cultural and Religious Discourse in Oman: An Analytical Study of the Earliest Omani Publications up to 1977

Abstract
Omani publications up to 1977 numbered more than a hundred titles, and the branches of knowledge they treated were varied, distributed among the principles of religion and creed, jurisprudence and its principles, history, literature and language, and the maritime sciences. A rapid look at the list of these titles shows the reader the predominance of certain branches of knowledge over others: the religious sciences occupied first place, and yet even within them the branches were unbalanced — titles treating the principles of religion, divine unity and creed received greater attention, while other fields of knowledge did not receive an ample share. From another angle, this study examines the bodies, institutions and individuals who supervised or carried out the production of the Omani book from the second half of the twentieth century, and what the pattern of these publications reveals about the cultural and religious discourse of the period.
