Abstract

The study documents the beginnings of printing activity in the Sultanate of Zanzibar, starting with the printing machine brought to Zanzibar by Sultan Barghash ibn Saʿīd in 1872, passing through the presses of the Indian Kaki family founded in 1890, and the presses that followed them — those of the Turya, Parsi and Iqbal families, and the Arabic al-Najāḥ press. Printing activity and its development in the Sultanate of Zanzibar is among the fields that have not received the attention of researchers, despite its importance for recording cultural, scholarly and journalistic activity there. Having traced the development of printing, the study follows the first beginnings of press activity in the Sultanate, starting with The Gazette for Zanzibar and East Africa, issued in 1892 and the first newspaper to appear in the Sultanate, followed by private newspapers of which the first was Samachar, founded by an Indian businessman.
