Abstract

To speak of the history of the Sultanic Press is to speak of the culture of the historical, civilizational and religious inheritances that form the backbone of its achievements: it was a developing course and a site of human activity, rising and falling by stages and moving towards a purpose set in advance. The Sultanic Press was established in Zanzibar during the reign of Sultan Barghash ibn Saʿīd (1870–1888) and published dozens of Omani books, religious and literary works above all. This great achievement in printing and publishing prepared the way for a further development with far-reaching effects in raising awareness and spreading Arab-Islamic culture. An Omani source closely connected with the later sultans of Zanzibar recorded the role of this press in publishing the religious and literary heritage, observing that had it printed nothing but Himyān al-Zād, Qāmūs al-Sharīʿah, the gloss on al-Tartīb and Mukhtaṣar al-Khiṣāl, that alone would have sufficed.
