The Role of Omanis in Printing and Publishing Omani Books

دور العُمانيين في طباعة ونشر الكتب العُمانية
Abstract
Printing is among the most important things humankind achieved in the fifteenth century CE, and it is natural to find printing accompanied by publishing. For printing and publishing to take place, material support is required, whether official and governmental or through individuals, and this without doubt helps to diversify the books printed and published, and in turn contributes to enriching the Omani library with many books, which has a positive effect on cultural and intellectual life. Most books in Oman were copied by hand until recent times — the nineteen-fifties — whereas in Zanzibar printing was more advanced because of the establishment of the Sultanic Press in the time of Sayyid Barghash ibn Saʿīd in 1299 AH / 1882 CE. Printing naturally requires financial funding given all that accompanies the matter of producing a book, and this paper examines how Omanis met that need.
