Abstract

This study treats the mapping of the Islamic mission to Oman in the Prophetic era through a historical-geographical approach, seeking to reconstruct the routes of the mission that linked Medina to Oman in the time of the Prophet, on the basis of the historical texts and the historical geography of the Arabian Peninsula, in the absence of any maps drawn in that period. It proceeds from the hypothesis that the historical texts, with the indications of place and movement they carry, constitute material adequate for producing analytical and interpretive maps that help in understanding the geographic dimension of the early Islamic mission in Oman. The study uses the analytical historical method together with the historical-geographical method, employing techniques of cartographic reconstruction to convert textual data concerning the Prophetic letters and the movement of Omani delegations into map representations showing directions of movement, centres of reception and the network of the mission's spread within the Omani space. It includes applied examples: maps of the journey of the Companion Māzin ibn Ghaḍūbah from Oman to Medina, and maps of the outward and return movement of the Companion Zuhayr ibn Qurḍum al-Mahrī.
