The Role of Historical Documents in Strengthening Identity and National Belonging: The Prophetic Letters to the People of Oman as a Case Study

Abstract
The historical document, in its comprehensive sense, is a foundation in the shaping of national identity and the rooting of the values of loyalty and belonging, which is reflected in turn in the stability of the national security system. This study offers a graded inductive and analytical reading that follows the historical development of Omani documents and sets out their central effect in rooting collective awareness and the civilizational self of society. It proceeds from the hypothesis that Omani historical documents are not an inert relic, and that the Omani documentary system was never merely a passing historical record but formed a behavioural and legislative anchor that protected sovereignty and social cohesion across the ages, serving as a safety valve for stability and national security in its comprehensive sense. To establish this hypothesis the study uses the documentary historical method and the analytical method across four themes, beginning with the earliest documentary roots in stone inscriptions such as the rock of Ḥiṣāt ibn Ṣalt and in early geographical maps, passing through the maturity of Omani diplomacy in its political treaties with the great powers.
