Abstract
Among the most prominent challenges facing those who work in the field of historical narration — and of the narrations of the Prophetic biography in particular — is the method adopted in criticising and sifting those narrations and distinguishing the fabricated from the established and the weak from the sound. While some narrations are measured against a rigorous critical method, that of the hadith scholars, a body of narrations is measured against a broader and more permissive method in accepting transmission, that of the historians; and the critical schools have accordingly differed in their orientation towards this large body of material. Among those schools is the Ibāḍī school, which gave attention to criticising certain narrations of the sīrah. The problem of this paper turns on a single essential question: what critical method did Shaykh Aḥmad al-Khalīlī adopt towards the narrations of the Prophetic biography in his writings? The researcher follows a descriptive method in analysing the various narrations and judging them, and the paper may reveal the most prominent critical and analytical features of the Shaykh's treatment of these texts.
