Abstract

The Omani poet ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlī al-Khalīlī (1922–2000) devoted a separate section of his collection Waḥy al-ʿAbqarīyah to the Prophetic biography. A reader of that section, entitled al-Madīḥ al-Nabawī, observes that the poet composed along the lines followed by the writers of sīrah: he opens his twenty-eight poems with the first years of prophethood, proceeds by stages through the campaigns and the letters to kings, and closes with the death of the Prophet. Taking the characteristics of poetic writing and its historical progression as its starting point, the research is built on the following problem: how do the poetic and the historical contend with one another within the text of the noble Prophetic biography? To answer this central question and the questions that branch from it, the study adopts an appropriate critical approach to the collection.
