Abstract
This study treats a pivotal period in the history of the region of Shiḥr ʿUmān, present-day Dhofar: the transition from the pre-Islamic era to the dawn of Islam. It aims to clarify the contexts of religious transformation in the region by analysing the Prophetic letters and correspondence addressed to its people and by tracing the exchange of delegations between the region and Medina. The problem it addresses is the need to illuminate the functional role of the Companions of this region who lived in the time of the Prophet, whose role was not confined to embracing Islam but extended to their being active in establishing the foundations of the state in the region and spreading the mission in the neighbouring horizons — particularly in the period following the Prophet's death and the political and military events that accompanied it in the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. The study uses the descriptive historical method together with comparative analysis between the accounts of the Prophetic biography in the principal sources and what is found uniquely in the books of sīrah and in the Omani heritage.
