Abstract
The geological and fossil sites of Al Jabal Al Akhdar form an integrated natural system documenting the development of ancient sedimentary environments along a very old continental margin. The system comprises igneous and fossil-bearing rock sites, exposed carbonate formations, karst features and rich stratigraphic sections extending across several geological periods. These sites reflect shallow, warm marine environments of high biological productivity, hosting a fossil diversity that includes corals, molluscs, brachiopods and fish. The value of these parks lies in the quality of their preservation of fossils and sedimentary structures within limestone and dolomite, which permits the reconstruction of ancient ecosystems and an understanding of climatic change and sea-level fluctuation. They also display developed karst features such as caves and dissolution voids, reflecting later interactions between rock and groundwater after tectonic uplift. Beyond their scientific value, these parks are an important record for understanding the development of sedimentary basins and their relation to petroleum systems, given the role of carbonate rocks as principal hydrocarbon reservoirs.
