Abstract
Al Jabal Al Akhdar in the Sultanate of Oman is among the most prominent geographical landmarks to have attracted the attention of foreign travellers over past centuries, for its strategic position and its temperate climate compared with the rest of the Arabian Peninsula. The writings of these travellers form an important historical source, documenting their observations of the natural setting, social life and economic activity of the region. The importance of these writings is not confined to their descriptive side but extends to their being scholarly material that helps in understanding social and cultural transformation and reveals the image of Omani society in a given historical period through an external perspective. Hence the importance of this research, which seeks to study Al Jabal Al Akhdar as foreign travellers saw it and to analyse the content of those journeys critically. Its central problem is the question: how did foreign travellers portray Al Jabal Al Akhdar, and to what extent do their writings reflect the geographic and social reality of the region? The research uses the descriptive-analytical historical method, gathering and analysing the texts of foreign travellers who visited the Sultanate of Oman.
